John McKenzie

Scottish Fencing is sad to report the death on 18 May of John McKenzie, a former international epeeist, Scottish Champion, and a dedicated coach who introduced many school children to fencing over a long period. His family have our condolences and sympathy.

The funeral will be held at 11.30am on Thursday 9 June at Dunfermline Crematorium.

John contributed much to fencing in Scotland and a full obituary will be published later. He had a strong interest in the history of the sport here and assembled a collection of historical material. In the last few months he and his daughter Tracy completed and digitised a full set of the newsletters of the Scottish Amateur Fencing Union, running from 1959 to 1990. These have been presented to Scottish Fencing and we have a project to index them and make them available through the website as a memorial to John.

John also tracked down and preserved two magnificent trophies, presented by two of the founder members of the Scottish Amateur Fencing Union, P J Ford and W G Burn Murdoch, in 1922 and 1933 respectively. He passed these into our hands for safe-keeping and further research.

Veterans Quad, Bristol 2022

The Scottish Veterans Team for the Quad was notable this year for 9 of the 22 selected, fencing in their first Home Nations event for Scotland.

With Hugh Kernohan confined through covid the men’s epee team were all debutants. Their highlight was storming back in their last three fights against Wales from 22-30 down to lose 43-44 in overtime. A rousing match to watch.

Woman’s epee bucked the trend with no debutants. In fact, Karen Grant, Maggie Tait and Lorna Smith have fenced together in 8 Quads and 3 Commonwealths since 2013.

For women’s sabre it was great to have a team of four sabreurs, with the youngest vet Roz Graham and the oldest female vet Viv Frith in the team.

The 'highlight' for men's foil was a very high-quality match with England which ended in an agonising 44-45 loss. At 44-44 a strong lunge attack for Scotland landed off target on a mask wire tag. England then took the final hit on the very next action with a piste length series of attacks finally ending with the hit arriving as Scotland reached the back line.

England won the overall event with Ireland the only other nation to achieve a weapon win at women’s foil. It was an enjoyable weekend and good practice for the Commonwealths in August, telling us where work is required.

We look forward to the next event in Dublin in 2023 and Scotland in 2024.

Earning their first cap for Scotland were:

  • Ruth Davidson - WF

  • Malcolm Downie - ME

  • Niall Campbell - ME

  • Andrew Brown - ME

  • Rory Gibson - MF

  • Roz Graham - WS

  • Yvonne Walls - WS

  • Richard Foster - MS

  • Lindsay Rodgers - MS

Allistair McCaw - Getting your club to function like a team

Scottish Fencing and Scottish Archery are delighted to welcome back Allistair McCaw to Edinburgh. Allistair was previously with us in 2019 where delegates enjoyed an excellent and insightful weekend.

This time we are running a shorter session on Monday 25th April from 7pm to 9.30pm at Peffermill Playing Fields at Edinburgh University. We are particularly keen to encourage club committee members or anyone who is keen to help their club be the best it can be to attend.

We understand that clubs are still recovering from and having to live with Covid so we are offering this opportunity on a ‘pay what you can’ basis. Hopefully this allows as many clubs as possible to be represented at the session.

The session is open for clubs in any sport and we are keen to see as many sports as possible represented so we can all learn together and create new contacts.

To sign up for the session please CLICK HERE

Scottish Fencing new organisational structure

Our Strategy document for 2022 – 2025, is supported by an organisational structure with two part-time and two full-time roles.

With the departure of our part-time CEO at the end of March we have taken the opportunity to consider if any other structures are possible within the confines of our current staffing.

We have decided three full-time roles would be advantageous, giving greater cohesion, simplifying communication, and making it easier to attract candidates.

The three full-time roles we have identified are:

  • Chief Operating Officer/ Head of Pathways

  • Fencing Community Development Manager

  • Operations Manager

Following an interview we are pleased to announce Clare Queen has been appointed to the role of Chief Operating Offer/ Head of Pathways with effect from Monday 18 April.

The Fencing Community Development Manager role will now be advertised.

FINAL COMMONWEALTH RANKINGS

The final ranking lists which will inform selection for the Commonwealth Championships which will be held in London in August are available now.

SENIOR - JUNIOR - CADET

If you are not on a list and think you should be, or if you think there are any errors please notify Paul Vaughan, performance@scottish-fencing.com, and Hugh Kernohan, governance@scottish-fencing.com, immediately.

The points totals are the best three results achieved since 1September, taken from the BF Ranking lists published at the end of March. The Results columns give the total number of scoring results recorded on the BF tables.

Fencers are reminded that in line with the published selection criteria it is the responsibility of any athlete whose selection journey has been adversely affected by an inability to compete (due to injury, illness, covid restrictions or any other reason) to inform performance@scottish-fencing.com of the circumstances in detail. The deadline for fencers to submit such information is midday on Sunday 10 April. The intention is for the selection panel to confirm the final teams by Tuesday 19 April.

The lists only include current members of Scottish Fencing (ie those with valid memberships who have identified their nation as Scotland in their BF record). They may include fencers who are not eligible to be selected for Scotland because they do not hold a UK passport: it is a requirement of the Commonwealth Fencing Federation rules that Home Nations competitors hold a UK passport.

Latest news - March 2022

Hello everyone

There are a few updates to share with you as we move into the new financial year.

We have hosted the first 2 of our 3 strategy sessions and it’s been a thoroughly enjoyable experience for Board and Staff. We are grateful to members for their open-handed contributions during the sessions and are looking forward to session number 3 next week.

If you haven’t yet signed up, please do consider joining us on April 6th. Click here to signup.

Also, we have reached the conclusion of our Commonwealth Lead Weapon Coach recruitment and the candidates within the process will be contacted imminently with the outcome. We are excited for the next few months and the development and building of a Scottish Team under the guidance of Performance Consultant Keith Cook and our Lead Weapon Coaches. Please do keep an eye on our web and socials for a little more from the coaches over the next few weeks.

Speaking of all things “social” and digital media, we are delighted to announce the appointment of Georgia Haynes as our volunteer Digital Media Manager. Georgia is well known in the community as a competitive fencer and part of the Edinburgh University Fencing Club however she is equally adept at all things digital and we are delighted to have her expertise onboard as we move towards delivering the next iteration of our #ForgingTheFuture strategy.

Under Georgia’s scope of all things digital, you can expect some new and transformed messaging and social presence and we are all delighted to have her join the team – keep your eye out for an intro from Georgia as well as perhaps a debut video on the Scottish Fencing TikTok channel….

As we move into April, team selection for commonwealth championships will be at the forefront of many fencers minds and we will stand up the selection committee under Performance Director Paul Vaughan early in April with selection notifications shortly afterwards. Team training dates and locations are set to be announced in April also giving athletes and coaches as much notice as possible to plan necessary travel and commitments around attendance.

On Monday 4th April, Head of Pathways and Community Change Clare Queen will be delivering a British Fencing anti-doping community education session – please click here to get involved. This is a critical session for anyone keen to understand the rules, regulations and environment around anti-doping alongside the athlete and coach requirements to staying clean.

It’s also a big weekend for Scottish representation at GB Level, with a number of Scottish Fencers representing GBR on the piste and in coaching roles off-piste. With a particularly strong representation from Salle Holyrood, we do of course wish everyone all the best at the World Championships.

A piece of work we have been developing over time is the launch of the Scottish Fencing online store and our transition to a new kit supplier. We are delighted to welcome Nike to the SF stable and thanks to our retail partner PSL, we have our online store up and running. Read more here

Finally, this is my last note to you as a member of staff here at SF HQ. I’d like to extend my thanks to all the fencing community for your support and counsel over the last 4.5 years and of course a massive thank you to the SF staff team for being such fantastic colleagues.

It was a pleasure to be a part of it for so long.

Vincent Bryson

CEO – Scottish Fencing
