There is an active and friendly community of veteran fencers with a growing series of age-category competitions for those over 40 years old. There are British, European and World Championships and many less serious events at home and abroad. The age categories are normally 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70+. You first become eligible on 1 January of the calendar year you turn 40 and your category is determined in the same way thereafter.

You can find many more details on the British Veterans Fencing website.

Scotland teams take part in an annual Veterans Four Nations match, and in Commonwealth Veterans championships held every two years. These teams are administered by an informal committee of weapon captains: Sheila Anderson (WF), Richard Foster (MS), Karen Grant (WE), Hugh Kernohan (ME), Mike McKay (MF), and Michele Narey (WS).

There’s also a biennial Celtic Challenge competition, open to veteran fencers from Brittany, Asturias, Galicia, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Cornwall, Channel Islands and other Celtic nations.

Anyone interested in finding out more about veterans fencing in general or Scotland teams in particular can contact the weapon captains through scottish.fencing.veterans@gmail.com.

Eligibility

To represent Scotland in Veterans team events, fencers must fulfil at least one of the following criteria:

  • have been born in Scotland;

  • one of their natural parents must have been born in Scotland;

  • be permanently resident in Scotland and have been so for at least twelve months immediately prior to the date of the competition in question.

In addition, a fencer may not have represented another Home Country within one year of the competition at which they wish to be considered for Scottish representation.

If a fencer has previously been selected to represent Scotland in any age category under former approved rules, they will also be eligible to fence in Scottish Veterans teams.

(Stricter rules are applied by the Commonwealth Fencing Federation for eligibility for Commonwealth events.)
