Senior 5 Nations Fencing Championships 2010 - Selection Criteria

Scottish FencingThe 2010 5 Nations will take place on 19th June 2010 at the Hertfordshire Sports Village.

The event will be on the same day as the England Youth Champs and will start at lunchtime and run through to early evening.

Team selection will take place as soon as the 1st April GB rankings are available.

Selection criteria

To be considered for selection fencers must meet the criteria outlined below in the policy for eligibility for the Scottish senior fencing team.

Selection of the Scottish Team for the 5 Nations 19th June 2010 will be based on the GB senior rankings as at 1st April 2010 published on the British Fencing website.

A maximum of 4 fencers can be selected at each weapon.

Qualification will be based on achieving a place in the top 30 of the GB rankings.

The top three will be selected strictly according to their GB ranking. The fourth fencer will be at the discretion of the selectors.

The selectors may exercise their discretion in the selection of the fourth fencer in the following circumstances:

  • If any fencer or fencers ranked outside the top 3 who have been unable to compete for a significant part of the qualifying period due to factors outwith their control, such as injury or illness and who would, in normal circumstances, be considered extremely likely to have secured a team place through their position in the GB rankings.
  • A fencer for whom the selectors feel the investment in them is justified by their prospects for 2010 Commonwealth Championships.
  • It will be the responsibility of any fencer whose ranking has been adversely affected by an inability to compete to inform the Team Manager and to demonstrate their fitness prior to selection.

Where fewer than 3 eligible fencers at each weapon have achieved the qualifying standard the Selectors may exercise their discretion to select further fencers based on factors such as ranking, experience, potential and performance in team competition.

Team selection will be presented to the Management Board of Scottish Fencing Limited for ratification and, once ratified, the selected team members will be informed and the team will be published on the Scottish Fencing website within two weeks of ratification.

The only grounds for appeal will be a material inaccuracy in the April 2010 GB rankings used for selection and any such appeal should be made in writing to the Administrator at the Scottish Fencing office within two weeks of the publication of the April rankings on the British fencing website.
