Social Membership

Important amendment to SF Social Membership terms

Although this category has existed since the Home Country Agreement in 2004 (described as “Recreational Membership” on the SF website), it has hardly been used in Scotland.  We have made an agreement with British Fencing to alter the terms slightly, in order to encourage more people to take up membership.

The key changes are:

·        Someone who is already a member of SF can now down-grade their membership to the category of Social Member.  We hope that fencers who have retired from the competitive circuit will take advantage of this category as well as parents, club officials, volunteers and other non-fencing individuals.

·        Anyone resident in Scotland, or otherwise eligible to represent Scotland (see conditions elsewhere on website and membership form) can apply for Social Membership of SF.  At present, the annual subscription rate is £10 of which £5 is transferred as a levy to British Fencing.

·        Social Members are granted the right to vote at an SF general meeting but BF will not grant equivalent rights for BF general meetings.

·        Social members will receive e-versions of “The Point” but not printed versions

·        Social members are insured under the BF insurance scheme with personal accident and civil liability cover to fence at a single nominated club venue only, and to enter one competition (see below).  Note that insurance is not automatically in place upon receipt of membership fee – an additional notification will be sent when BF has entered a social member into the scheme.

·        Social members will have the right to enter a single prescribed competition each season, and they will be insured under the BF insurance scheme for this competition only.  The prescribed competition list may vary from time-to-time and will be posted on the website.  Initially it will be one of any of the Scottish age group (U12, U13, U17, U20) championships or the Scottish beginners/intermediate championships or the Scottish senior championships.

·        If a Social Member wishes to up-grade to a full Membership within 6 months of taking out Social Membership, half of their Social Membership fee will be credited against their full fee.
