Alex has been involved in fencing for over 16 years having success across all three weapons at youth level and making the UKSG team in two different weapons in 2009 and 2012. Due to injury, Alex retired from competitive fencing in 2013 and moved onto coaching and development. Currently he coaches at the Sancroft Blades and is often seen refereeing at various youth competitions across Scotland.

Alex has a Bsc(Hons) in Sport Development from the University of the West of Scotland, specialising in sport psychology, equality and anti-discrimination. He was part of and conducted research for the Sport and Science Athena Swan Self-Assessment Team, where he worked to identify potential discrimination at the University.

In the sports industry, Alex worked for the Scottish Student Sport Fencing for over three and a half years, where he selected and managed the team for the 2014, 15 and 16 Student Five Nations as well as organising and running annual events throughout the year. Alex also worked as a Sport Development intern for South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture for over two years. During his internship he worked with the Clydesdale Sport Council helping to organise and run community sport hub events and competitions. Alex currently works as a freelance coach for them; designing and running a plastic fencing course for P4-7s in Hamilton.

Alex says "I am looking forward to working with both Scottish Fencing and all the clubs in the West of Scotland, many of which I am already very familiar with. As well as working to help clubs achieve the Swordmark standard I am going to be continuing my equality work within Scottish Fencing, aiming to achieve and surpass the targets set out in the SF Equality Action plan".
