Hugh Kernohan

Director (Performance and Governance)
On Board Since:
March 2017

Key responsibilities: Performance and governance

Background: At the end of 2015 I retired after a career in London as a senior civil servant in the Ministry of Defence and returned to live in Scotland, on the Isle of Skye.

I started fencing as a schoolboy in Edinburgh in 1971 with Bert Bracewell, progressing through Scottish Schools, Under-20 and Senior ranks into the British epee team in 1985. I was one of three Scots in the 1988 Olympic team in Seoul, with Don McKenzie and Fiona McIntosh.  The next year I was British Epee Champion. In 1991 I stopped fencing to concentrate on family and career and did not return until 2014. I now compete regularly across the UK in veterans and open events. I have since fenced in two World Veterans and two Commonwealth Veterans championships.  In 2015 I fenced in the annual Five Nations match, some 27 years after I last fenced in it.
